Alana J. Chain
Operations Manager

My Role at Barron:

As the Operations Manager at Barron, my responsibilities include the enchancement of processes and controls as well as work to ensure open communication and firm adherence to compliance, to manage and maintain cash balances, and to work with external parties on trades pre- and post-execution. I especially focus on the cleantech industry, attending industry trade shows, and building relationships with cleantech industry analysts and experts. In addition to my work as the Operations Manger, I perform financial analysis, comprehensive industry research, and in-house origination.  I especially focus on the cleantech industry, attending industry trade shows, and building relationships with cleantech industry analysts and experts.

How I Got Here:

I joined Barron after graduating from the University of Vermont, where I began my studies with a focus in pre-medicine, but later shifted my path to focus on a major in political science and a minor in French. During my undergraduate studies, I worked as a laboratory assistant for a chemistry professor, studying the effectiveness of biodiesel fuels in cars. I later became a research assistant for a political science professor writing a biographical work on a former Speaker of the House and still work with him on projects to date. I also spent some time as an intern for WCAX News in Burlington and for the Chittenden County State's Attorney's Office.

Most Exciting Thing I've Done at Barron:

I could easily and without question say that our 2010 Barron retreat in China was the most exciting thing I've done at Barron. The experiences, the sites, the culture and, most importantly, the people made the trip not only unique and informational, but also a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I'll never forget. But, to be honest, the most exciting thing I've done at Barron is any or every day at Barron. I can honestly say that almost every day I learn something new and am challenged, which is of utmost importance to me. I've had the chance to research, write and analyze. I've also been privileged enough to attend conferences, network with leaders in their fields, and visit with companies in various industries in the U.S. and China. Every day is an adventure.

Hottest Industry or Sector:

Solar energy has the potential to be at the forefront of the energy-efficiency revolution, gradually making a change in the global carbon footprint as leaders across the globe begin to embrace it as a reliable energy source.

Favorite Holiday or Festival:

I am tempted to say "all" due to various family traditions, but to be precise, my favorites are Hanukkah and Christmas. I've been fortunate enough to be brought up to appreciate and celebrate both. The smell of cold and evergreens, snowy days, and the combination of family and friends make the winter months my favorite time of year.

Something I Do to Make the World a Better Place:

I work with a former professor from time to time helping to research and edit his books; and write op-eds for a paper in my hometown on occasion, usually advocating fiscal responsibility when it comes to budget spending. The values I learned as a child have led me to be an advocate for animal rights and the rights of those with learning disabilities. I am also a board member for the Barron Charitable Foundation.
